I recently began studying for the GRE, a standardized test similar to the SAT, except it is used in graduate school instead of undergrad. I went through the whole SAT she-bang; the vocabulary cards, the weekend classes, the weekly tutors (one for math, one for verbal) and I figured the GRE would be a matter of brushing up my skills and refreshing my memory. But with seemingly most things lately, I was dead wrong.
Just one hour into a practice test, struggling to keep my spirits from sinking as low as my score, I released that I had forgotten how hard preparing for the SATs was. I forgot the long hours of practice tests that never came close to actually predicting my score, the countless numbers of workbooks I mindlessly read through, the stacks of hundreds of vocabulary cards I was forced to flip through- even though to this day, I only can remember one of them: the word was "ameliorate," it means to "heal or make better," and it had a picture of a nurse and wheelchair-bound patient on it.
I sure need to brush up on my vocabulary skills, if I have any shot at getting into a reputable grad school. Here's a couple of words that popped up on my practice GRE test- how many do you know?
-Jejune
-Anathematize
-Saturnine
-Vituperative
-Fecundity
-Obsequious
-Miscegenation
-Quixotic
-Expurgate
