Crazy things happen when there is a little to much drinking.
Saturday night, after my annual Bastille Day Fireworks party, my neighbor Cynthia wondered over from her side of the dock and invited us on her boat to go to Sunset Beach on Shelter Island. Sunset Beach is the closest thing we have around here that is like St.Barts. The people are beautiful, the food is delicious, I love the Moules and Frites, the music is seductive and of course, its on the beach. Everyone is drinking Rosee or Mojitos. I could what those bartender muddle mint all day long. Trust me it is very entertaining.
Sunset Beach is located on an Shelter Island. The operative word being island. If you are not a resident then you need to either take a ferry, but it is best to come by boat. Lucky for me our host Cynthia and Jay have the perfect boat, along with a jet boat to take us into shore. It all seemed perfect. We left East Hampton Point around 11:30am picked up some other friends in Sag Harbor and were on our way to a day of good friends, good food , sun and fun.
All was going well . Jay shuttled us in a few at time. We were seated fairly quickly for Sunset Beach but Jay and his friend Chip as in Chips Ahoy were no where in site. Somehow the line for the jet boat got caught in the engine. No worries these boys had a plan. With a steak knife borrowed from the restaurant they were going to cut the rope out of the engine. A brilliant plan, the men were going to get to use tools, in the meanwhile the girls could shop.
The shop at Sunset Beach is exquisite. It has all you need for a perfect day at Sunset Beach. Just think you show up at Sunset Beach wearing something you don't like, or you just showed up there on a whim, you can purchase a bikini, trunks ,cover up, earrings, flip flops and even a towel. You will look extremely chic. This is a place to see and be seen. Needless to say, this is right up my alley.
Anyway the boys worked feverishly and was able to get the rope dislodge from the engine. Yeah the jet boat started. Applause from all the displaced passengers of the SS Chatchka.
Uh oh what now. It seemed Chippy had started the boat to close to the shore and had sucked up rocks into the engine. We were stranded again.
My son Alexander, and my friend Eileen always intrepid swam out to the boat. they left me literally holding the bag. A bag of shoes, cell phones, wallets and cameras. I couldn't swim. Lucky for the rest of us there were a group of adorable guys with Jet skis. Valiantly they shuttled us all back to the yacht and joined us in some celebratory cocktails.
The rest of the day was spent lounging in the sun, singing, and taking pictures.
