Eileen Hickey-Hulme, a New York City painter who recently displayed her work at Big Apple Florist, is bringing something new to the art world. That's because all of her work—including the image above—is created with nail polish, eyeshadow, and lipstick. "I want to change how the world sees these materials," she says. "Plus, I've always seemed to have tons of makeup around me." We spoke to Hickey-Hulme for the scoop on her work.
How did you start using makeup as your art medium?I started using nailpolish when I was like eight years old. I would take these teeny seashells, glue them down, and paint them with nail polish. I've always been attracted to makeup for the colors, radiance, luminescence—you just can't get the same look with oil paints. Plus, I like the gender aspect of it. I'm taking girly materials and giving them a new power. Where do you get all your makeup? I have a lot of free samples with purchase, that sort of thing. And now that my friends know I use it, everyone gives their free samples and cast-offs to me. But I'm very equal-opportunity. I'll get stuff from the dollar bin; I'll get stuff from high-end boutiques. My current favorites are Flair, a nailpolish brand at Forever 21, and of course, Chanel.
Will you ever branch out of cosmetics? Absolutely. My husband recently painted our boat with this gorgeous silvery blue engine paint. I used it as the background in painting and topped it with nailpolish. I love that mix of masculine and feminine.
