Weight loss as easy as an extra glass of water
Before recent studies, it seemed like an old wives tale that drinking water before meals could promote weight loss. Virginia Tech researchers found that middle age people on a low fat, low calorie diet who drank two glasses of water before each meal lost more weight than those who didn’t. At the end of the 12 week study, the participants who drank water lost a whopping 15 pounds, while those who didn’t drink water only lost 11 pounds.
While this study shows that drinking water before meals provides some benefit in terms of weight loss, it may only work with middle aged adults. Why? In youngins, water leaves the stomach almost immediately; in older people, water travels through the stomach at a much slower rate – leaving them feeling full longer.
Water’s a super effective means to feeling full because it’s zero calories! So if you’re looking for a simple way to lose some of those pounds you’ve tacked on over the years, this could be a viable avenue.
