10 Great Books for Summer Reading

Summer reading is more a state of mind than seasonal, but when state of mind meets New England summer, the conditions are just right! For the first of several summer reading lists, I have a mix of  last summer’s favorites now out in paper and some new releases I recently read and really enjoyed! Some of these author interviews are up on www.readingwithrobin.com but no fair tuning in until after you've read the book!

Camille Noe Pagan/The Art Of Forgetting - debut and just out!

With stacks of books patiently waiting their turn to be read, how is it that a new book will arrive and push its way to the top? As soon as I saw the cover and read the blurbs from several of my favorite authors, I put down what I was reading and dove right in (won't tell so don't ask!). At its center the book is about the friendship of two women who meet as teens at boarding school. Marissa Rogers and Julia Ferrar find themselves coping with the effects of a sudden traumatic brain injury after Julia is hit by a car while crossing the street. Through the years we see these women following their dreams and rooting for each other, though there is always an elephant in the room.Humor, sensitivity and attention to detail will likely bring to mind an old friend and you might just feel like picking up the phone-or digging around on Facebook!

J. Courtney Sullivan/Maine - just out!

Sullivan's first novel, Commencement, was such a treat that when I heard a new one was coming out I got right on securing an advanced copy! Always fun to read a book before it's released into the reading population! I am drawn to books where a summer home is a main character. A functioning dysfunctional multigenerational story in said home makes it the perfect read! The women in the Kelleher family have little in common yet each seeks acceptance and understanding from the others. Classic, old family grudges are always simmering below the surface. The story slides down like a smooth summer cocktail!

Laura Dave/First Husband - just out!

I became a fan of Laura's writing style and wit after reading The Divorce Party (the title alone!). In First Husband the fun continues with the age old question of did I pick the right guy? I love a story where our heroine starts off thinking she has it all figured out. Laura did her research for this book finding out what the ingredients are that will help to ensure a successful relationship. Does true love exist and is the possibility enough to keep us hoping? Witty and page-turning, toss this book in the tote bag and you'll be assured an entertaining day at the beach!

Meg W. Clayton/The Four Ms.Bradwells

A gifted storyteller, Meg Clayton, spins a tale about four women who have been best friends since their first days at law school. The friends have come together years later when one is awaiting senate confirmation for her appointment to the Supreme Court. The foursome consists of the funny one,the rebel, the good girl and the savant. There are skeletons in the closet that come to light during the hearings threatening to ruin any chances of the appointment. Secrets, affairs, marriages, divorces and all the joys that life can hold surround the lives of these women against the back-drop of the the inequities that women continue to endure in their professional and personal lives. Lots of light moments also permeate the story making this one of my favorite summer picks!

Caroline Leavitt/Pictures Of You

I picked up Pictures Of You and could hardly put it down! I have been a fan of Leavitt's writing for many years and as I follow Caroline on Facebook felt like I was along for the ride as she typed away at this latest book. Totally unpredictable, this book is a literary joy of a read! An engrossing mystery is woven around the lives of two women who meet by chance as they are each running away from something or someone. I dare anyone to figure it out as they read along. Suspenseful and thought-provoking - how well do really know the people we love. Life is complicated and so are the characters that we come to understand. Oh, the drama!!

Danielle Ganek/The Summer We Read Gatsby

Does this title scream summer, or what? Evoking summers at the lake, sipping mint juleps and days that never seem to end. A summer home takes center stage in this book when two half-sisters inherit a broken-down cottage from their beloved Aunt Lydia. The sisters seemingly have little in common and when they are forced together in this home to figure out its future the fun and mystery begins! Written in Ganek's witty style, it kind of makes you want to take one of those rainy summer days and reread Gatsby... or watch the movie! A win either way and much better without the English exam at the end!

Amy Bourret/Mother and Other Liars

The title alone made me want to pick this one up! Is there anything more powerful than a mother's love? Even if there are extenuating circumstances under which the mother and child came to be together? You will fall in love with Ruby and Lark as their story unfolds and face the heartbreaking truth that is their lives. What would it be like to find out that you are not the person you always thought you were? What happens to the trust and love you've known all of your life and where do you go from there?

Lynne Griffin/Sea Escape

The author of Life Without Summer returns with another summer must-read. This book also centers around a beloved summer home, Sea Escape. Laura Martinez has a busy life as a nurse, wife and mother to two young children. She also has a mother who needs her and Laura hopes that the happy memories once shared at Sea Escape will have a healing effect. The power of Lynne's storytelling is also evident in the way she incorporates the love letters written by Laura's father to her mother. An added bonus - Laura learns that mother and daughter share more than they know. A lot can be learned from past generations.

Ayelet Waldman/Red Hook Road

The story of two very different families and the tragedy that occurs right at the start of this compulsively readable book hook the reader in! Set on the coast of Maine over four summers, these families must find a way to relate to each other if for no other reason than their children were once connected. Music and literature figure heavily into the storyline, joys that make life livable. In reflecting about this book I so loved last summer it makes me want to take another trip down Red Hook Road!

Sue Miller/The Lake Shore Limited

Many of Sue's novels are among my favorite books of all time: While I Was Gone, The Good Mother and more recently, The Senator's WifeThe Lake Shore Limited joins this list of fabulously told stories and is so vividly told that I can imagine it being performed as the play that we read about in the story.  A book with lots of layers - that's for me! At the heart of this novel is the question of a relationship that may not have lasted as long as it did had it not been for the tragic events of September 11th. Really makes the reader think. Just what a brilliant novel is supposed to do! Having interviewed Sue several times I am constantly amazed by her humility and wonder if she knows just how marvelous she is!

The Dukan Diet French Women Diet Too

The Dukan Diet  is Diet you are going to be hearing about. Royal to be Kate Middleton and her mother are following the plan . I am sure they are going to nickname it 'The Princess Diet".    From what I can surmise, its  The Atkins Diet meets French Women Don't Get Fat, two diets which I have tried.
Unfortunately, things don’t have to be completely proven or safe for people to try them. It promises to give quick results without a lot of work. For this reason celebrities  Jennifer Lopez, and Gisele Bundchen have been swearing by the diet.
Next month the American edition will be available, and you can look at it for yourself. I personally stand by the belief that any healthy weight loss is not quick and definitely not easy. However, for long term results and general well being cutting calories and getting exercise is the key.

“This is just another one of those diets invented by a charismatic individual who makes a lot of promises and has loads of testimonials but is not based on any scientific data whatsoever,” Frank Sacks, professor of cardiovascular disease prevention at Harvard, told the Times.
The basics are a high-protein, low-fat approach, lots of water, all the oat-bran you can eat, lots of veggies, no fruit, and a few wine and desert days to make it all livable.
The exercise requirement sounds light enough for most Americans – 20 minutes of walking and no elevators.
Does any of this work? Supermodel Giselle Bundchen thinks so, but what does she know, she probably only eats watercress salad. You’re going to need to check it out for yourself to decide.
What does the Dukan diet menu consist of? Have you tried a Dukan diet recipe or suffered any Dukan diet side effects? I'd love to know.

TurboSlim Plus 10 Healthy Living Tips and Tricks

To say that I struggle with my weight , would be an understatement.   Me, I am willing to try almost anything to try and drop even an ounce.  Peek into my cabinets and you will find leftovers of diet products that I gave up on.  Call it the diet product graveyard.  Somehow,  I keep these products, thinking I might just give them another try.

Only if I had been born French.  French women are just more stylish than I am, and need less to say THINNER!

That is why I am trying and trying to eat and behave like a French woman. Fortè Pharma and their product Turboslim Chronoactiv, which is a daily weight monitoring aid that utilizes the science of slimming chronobiology to optimize the body's natural weight loss actions. The formulation employs natural ingredients to help women in the quest to lose between 5 and 15 pounds.

10 Healthy Living Tips, Tricks  and Secrets

  1. Eat fiber every day. Fiber slows down sugars, “soaks up” fat, and cleanses and regulates the digestive track. Where to find the best sources? Raw veggies (in moderation), or two teaspoons of oat or wheat bran mixed into yogurt or applesauce will do the trick.
  2. Take vitamins every day! Americans suffer from all sorts of vitamin deficiencies as a result of our culture’s obsession with refined foods. Take back your health with a daily multivitamin taken during a meal.
  3. Moderate salt intake. Ah, salt. The flavorful seasoning we love to hate and hate to love. Whatever you do, don’t drive yourself crazy — the  “no salt” rule is just not realistic. Just be smart about it: try mixing a little salt into an herb and spice mix (or use an Herbes de Provence mix) to season your food, and never re-salt after cooking.
  4. Learn to identify the difference between a good fat and a bad fat. Bad fats are of the saturated variety (think bacon and egg yolks). Good fats are of the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated varieties (like fish, olive oil, nuts, and avocados).
  5. Walk, walk, walk. French women don’t belong to “gyms.” They just walk everywhere. Walking is the single best method for regulating metabolism, nervous system and blood sugar level.
  6. Remove the “extreme diet” lingo from your vocabulary. They don’t work. Why? Because historically, people don’t stick to them, which creates a yo-yo effect, which paves the way for obesity. The best diet is “rebalancing” the neurodigestive circuits, which ultimately leads to healthy weight loss and achievement of your “ideal weight.” This is what Turboslim does!
  7. Understand glycemic and Slim-Data food indexes. This will help you recognize the impact foods have on organs and digestion. Find a helpful chart athttp://www.glycemicedge.com/glycemic-index-chart/.
  8. Learn the essentials of balanced meals. The importance of fruits, vegetables and herbs to balance out protein and fat consumption is the essence of any healthy diet.  Add in healthy doses of non-sparkling, room temperature water throughout the day and you’ve got a recipe for perfection.
  9. Appreciate the notion that “time” is on your side. Sure, you can’t turn back the hands of time, but you can make each tick more enjoyable. This means, enjoy the time you spend cooking a meal (it’s great stress relief) and savor each bite slowly (it improves assimilation and is better for digestion).
  10. Keep your emotions in check. Stress and emotional pressure have a major impact on our metabolic balance. So take five minutes before and after each meal to just sit, relax, and breathe. Your body (and mind) will thank you!

Turboslim is $29.99 and is available at Rite-Aid.

New Years Resolution #1 (For the 35th time)

So the holidays came and went and many of us ate our way through them.  I don’t mean just one week each December.  It starts sometime just before Halloween, when we are surrounded by chocolate and candy.  It continues with our favorite foods, drinks and deserts right through Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanza  (maybe even a few other holidays I have missed).   Then New Years’ Eves passed and we once again made a resolution to loose the weight.   But, the important part is that despite past failures, we still resolve to lose the weight.

Here’s the good news.  This time can be different.  Really, I am not joking and it is not that hard.  Ask someone who has tried and succeeded.  Two years ago, with complete skepticism I tried Medifast.  In 4 weeks I lost 20lbs and have kept it off since.  I know that some people have more to lose and some less, the bottom line… it is working for many.  Take Shape for Life is a weight loss program designed to help you lose the weight in a quick and healthy way.

5 Top Weight Loss Habits

My  trainer  Merv T's list of the 5 top weight loss habits is based not on a study or news story;   based on his personal observations among clients, nutrition professionals, and his  personal experience. The list comes from people who have lost weight and kept it off for years, and they swear by surprisingly simple techniques to stay on track. Here they are.

Start your day with a huge glass of water. Every single day.
The first thing you should do after your feet touch the floor in the morning is head straight for the kitchen and pour yourself at least 12 ounces of fresh, cold water. (Yes, it's best to finish it before you dive into your coffee!)

Why it works: Water will "cleanse" your body after an overnight fast, helping you feel refreshed and alert (and who wouldn't want that in the morning?). This is a great way to set the tone for a healthy day! And a start like that helps you make the right decisions about what you're going to have for breakfast and whether you'll make it to the gym. It will also give you a better workout, since you'll feel more hydrated. Good hydration also keeps your joints flexible, which may reduce your risk of injury, so you can keep moving. Finally, a big glass of water will start filling you up so you won't overeat at breakfast -- it helps make you a better judge of your own satiety.

Include a source of fat and/or protein at every meal and snack.
It's tempting to eat just a handful of grapes or pretzels when your stomach is growling between meals, but it just may sabotage your diet (even if you are eating foods you "allow").

Why it works: For many people, eating just carbs for a meal or snack never gives them a feeling of being satisfied. That's because simple carbs don't have staying power: fat and protein slow down the insulin/glucose response, keeping your blood sugars level, promoting satiety, and helping you stay on track the rest of the day. Try some almond butter or a handful of nuts with your apple, a hard-boiled egg with your raisin bran, or some hummus with your pretzels. And of course, plan your meals and snacks in advance.

If you go "off" your diet, forgive yourself and move on.
Maybe you indulge in one too many glasses of wine at a dinner party, and this leads to having a big rich dessert... or two... Don't hate yourself in the morning. Drink a big glass of water (see above) to clean your slate, and start over.

Why it works: One diet slip-up is not going to make a difference in the long run. Of course, daily blunders are no longer occasional... truly infrequent indulgences may actually help prevent burnout and give you some reprieve against a too-strict mindset. If you punish yourself or wallow in self-loathing because you didn't stick to your plan, you risk overall diet failure. We are human. We err. Keep the big picture in mind and try harder next time. In fact, I would recommend to have one “off” day a week!

Write down specific goals. Include times, dates, and other details.
Change them to keep them fresh, and adjust them as you meet your older goals. For example, "I will fit into my skinny jeans in 60 days" or "By November 30, I will no longer eat in front of the TV" or "I will be up to 12,000 steps a day by January 15."

Why it works: It's harder to kid ourselves about what it takes to do something specific than what it takes to do something general. For example, if your goal is to be able to run five miles by June 1st, it's very hard to delude yourself into thinking that being up to 2 miles by May 15th will work. But if your goal were less specific - for example, to "run more often," you would have a much easier time convincing yourself you're doing well when you're really not. Being more specific helps you to plan more effectively and better understand how you're doing, both of which are powerful allies in reaching your goals.

Resistance train 2 to 3 times a week.

Regular cardio exercise burns calories when exercising. However, resistance training will increase your lean muscle mass, which will increase your basic metabolic rate, so you'll burn more calories even at rest.

Why it works: While aerobic exercise burns fat during exercise, anaerobic exercises, like weight training, utilize fat hours after exercise. Weight training can also increase the metabolic rate a second way: It increases and restores muscle tissue, and therefore your BMR (Body Metabolic Rate).  Weight training exercises that use large muscle groups (e.g. gluteus maximus, quadriceps, hamstrings, chest and back exercises), with a progressively greater resistance, have the most potential for restoring lean body weight and raising the metabolism hours after exercise.

Clear Your Colon By Christmas

5 Reasons to Detox
By Elaine Zeitler, Certified Colon Hydrotherapist and Health Coach

Recently, a lot of attention has been buzzing around about cleansing and detoxification. The topic of juice cleansing (BluePrintCleanse, Clean Program, Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox, etc.) and off-the-shelf detox programs are becoming so popular that you probably know at least one person doing such a program. However, before jumping into a detox program, you may want some more information. If so, here are 5 reasons to consider cleansing and detoxification:
Jump Start Weight Loss
There is no better way to jump start a weight loss program than to start with cleansing. By eating healthier foods and cleaning the body, weight loss naturally happens. Once cleansing begins, we naturally think before we put “less than desirable” foods into our bodies.

Lack of Energy
Lack of energy and fatigue is something we confront on a daily basis. Lack of sleep, poor diet and stress contribute to the constant drain on our energy. Many of the foods and beverages we ingest each day are chock full of chemicals, additives and preservatives. As these substances accumulate in the body, our energy is constantly strained. The body is constantly trying to break these substances down. When we cleanse, we start to remove these toxins and energy naturally begins to return.
Clearer Skin
Commonly we try to remedy acne and other skin problems with medications, creams and visits to the doctor. However, the buildup of toxins in the body manifests themselves as an outbreak in the skin. This may take form as acne, rashes and more serious skin inflammations. A full body cleanse offers reduced skin outbreaks and inflammations.
Clean Up from the SAD (Standard American Diet)
When it comes to choosing what to eat and nourishing our bodies, there is a lot of confusion. When we go shopping or try to decide what to eat, we are confronted with countless options. While most of these foods are considered safe, many contain chemicals and additives which buildup in the body and are difficult to breakdown and remove. Detox is an easy way to cleanse the body of these toxins.
Remove Toxins
Our bodies are constantly bombarded by toxins. Toxins are found everywhere – in the environment, our food, our water, cleaning solutions and even our personal care products. Our bodies are in deep overload. It is difficult to break down these toxins and often they are not fully eliminated by our bodies. As we begin to cleanse, we start to remove these toxins and start fresh.

TRY AND LEARN IS THE WAY OF THE STRONG

We all have to get out of our comfort zone when trying to realize our goals.

This journey will give you plenty of opportunities to try new things.

In most cases, there is not just one correct way, but many! Something might work for you and not for others, and vice-versa.

Make sure you make it a learning experience and see what works for you. Stay with your “winners” (what works for YOU) and adjust your “losers” (what doesn’t work for YOU).

Make sure you learn from YOUR experiences, so you won’t make the same mistake in the future!

Some more Weight Loss Tips;

1)      To calculate your daily caloric needs, take your current weight in lbs. and multiply it by 13 (if sedentary), 14 (if active), or 15 (gym regular/exercising every day). The resulting number is the amount of calories it takes, on average, to sustain your current weight. To find your daily caloric need for weight loss, subtract 500 calories from this number. Because a pound of fat equals approximately 3,500 calories, subtracting 500 calories a day for a week will result in a loss of one pound a week.

2)      Aim to burn a minimum of 300 calories per cardio session, five times a week and do whatever you can to maximize your caloric expenditure (turn the parking situation at the club to your advantage and deliberately park by the Holiday Inn). The extra calories you burn add up!

3)      Keep your blood sugar stable with regular “doses” of food. Eat breakfast within one hour of getting up in the morning. Don’t go more than four hours without eating.

4)      Eat protein with every meal and snack. It will help keep you fuller, longer.

5)      Stay away from refined carbs (white flour, sugar, etc.). Whole grains are not only better for your health, they’re also less likely to spike your blood sugar. How to tell if that “whole grain” bread or cereal is really whole grain? Check the nutrition facts panel. You should see at least 3 grams of fiber per serving.

6)      Drink eight, 8-oz. glasses of water every day. A bit of good news: Any liquid counts as water (example: clear soup), unless it’s caffeinated or contains alcohol.

7)      Beware of fats—no matter how healthy. A tablespoon of olive oil has 120 calories and it won’t fill you up.

8)      Although the phrase “fruits and vegetables” rolls of the tongue, the two are not nutritional equivalents. While fruit is good, veggies are better. Non-starchy veggies deliver the fiber and nutrients without the sugar and extra calories of fruit.

9)      Always look for “high volume” food choices. For example, whole oranges instead of orange juice, olives instead of olive oil. You’ll get more food for your calories.

10)    A good diet is one you can stick to for life. If you’re obsessing about food, denying yourself pleasure, or cutting out entire groups of food, you’re setting yourself up for a major fall. Life is too short to give up chocolate : ) Portion control is the answer!

Weight Loss as Easy As an Extra Glass of Water

Weight loss as easy as an extra glass of water

Before recent studies, it seemed like an old wives tale that drinking water before meals could promote weight loss.  Virginia Tech researchers found that middle age people on a low fat, low calorie diet who drank two glasses of water before each meal lost more weight than those who didn’t.  At the end of the 12 week study, the participants who drank water lost a whopping 15 pounds, while those who didn’t drink water only lost 11 pounds.

While this study shows that drinking water before meals provides some benefit in terms of weight loss, it may only work with middle aged adults.  Why? In youngins, water leaves the stomach almost immediately; in older people, water travels through the stomach at a much slower rate – leaving them feeling full longer.

Water’s a super effective means to feeling full because it’s zero calories!   So if you’re looking for a simple way to lose some of those pounds you’ve tacked on over the years, this could be a viable avenue.

Eat well and be well!
